US Air Force Experiments AI-Controlled Fighter Jet With a Historic Ride

The United States Air Force is advancing its exploration of AI’s potential with an AI-enabled F-16, shaping the future of air combat and military strategies.

It is no surprise that artificial intelligence (AI) is taking over everything. From manufacturing to automotive and healthcare to aviation, AI has made its footprint in almost every industry. In its next move in military aviation, the U.S. Air Force has experimented with an AI-controlled fighter jet. The F-16 fighter jet, distinguished by its orange and white livery, took a historic ride carrying the Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall.
AI-Controlled Fighter Jet - Vista
The AI-controlled fighter jet F-16, called Vista, flew Kendall in lightning-fast speed at more than 550 miles an hour. The jet flew nearly nose to nose with a second human-piloted F-16 within 1,000 feet of each other.
The U.S. Air Force is reportedly planning to deploy an AI-powered fleet of over 1,000 unmanned warplanes by 2028. This significantly recognizes the force’s AI as a strategic necessity. The move taken by the U.S. Air Force is driven by security considerations, cost-effectiveness, and the strategic need to maintain superiority in increasingly contested airspaces. In an interview, Kendall said, “It’s a security risk not to have it. At this point, we have to have it.”
Ethical and Humanitarian Concerns
With significant technological advancements, AI has always been an ethical and humanitarian concern, including its adoption in military operations. The ability of autonomous weapons systems also raises concerns about making life-and-death decisions without human intervention.
However, the adoption of advanced technologies like AI in the U.S. Air Force is advancing rapidly. The AI-controlled F-16, Vista, is the recent exploration of a broader effort to leverage the potential of AI.
