April 2023 – What are the thoughts of Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Alphabet Inc., and its subsidiary Google about AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Bard? Since ChatGPT has showcased the ability to write articles, review codes and create images based on text inputs, there has been widespread anxiety among professionals that soon their jobs would become redundant.
In a recent podcast with the New York Times (NYT), Sundar Pichai said AI chatbots would do some grunt work and make programming more fun. According to him, for software engineers, there are two things that will be true. One is some of the hard work they do as part of programming is going to get better. That could mean programming would become less tedious and fun, just how Google Docs makes writing easier. The other thing, according to him, society would have to adapt to the new technology and hence everyone will have to adjust and make course-correct in certain areas.
Google launched Bard, its answer to OpenAIs ChatGPT and Microsofts Bing chatbot earlier on March 21st, but failed to gather much attention. Pichai said that part of the reason for Bards limited capabilities was a sense of caution within Google and the company would gradually put out a more capable model after ensuring it can fully handle it well.
