The partnership will help Toyota to explore the untapped potential in the shared and digital economy – GlobalData.

August 2020 – Following the news that Japan-based Toyota Motor has expanded its global collaboration with Amazon Web Services with an eye on future car technology; Animesh Kumar, Director of Automotive Consulting at GlobalData, a leading research and consulting company, offers his view: "The collaboration is a key move, which takes Toyota closer towards its aspiration of transitioning into a 'mobility company' and forms part of its connected vehicle strategy announced in late-2016. The move will accelerate the development of services under its Mobility Services Platform (MSPF), which targets development of data-driven mobility services.
"The move will help Toyota strengthen its position in products and technologies related to CASE i.e., Connected, Autonomous, Shard and Electric. It will help the company develop new services while increasing safety, convenience as well as security in Toyota's cloud-connected vehicles. New and improved services include car sharing, ridesharing, predictive vehicle maintenance, passenger safety and vehicle security related modules, driving behaviour-based insurance among others.
"Amazon's existing presence in the automotive sector and broad capabilities including AI/ML, IoT, HPC, and data analytics will offer scalability to Toyota's existing mobility solutions. Toyota has actively tried to increase its presence in shared mobility business by partnering with global and regional mobility players such as Uber and Grab. The data gathered and analysis will also be applied to enhance vehicle design, development and maintenance.
"The partnership is win-win for both the parties. It will help Toyota to explore the untapped potential in the shared and digital economy and pave the way towards its vision of 'leading the future mobility'. At the same time, it will also strengthen Amazon's expertise in automotive business globally."
