Human VS Robot Can They Co-Exist?

The full budget presented by the Union Government on July 5th – being an election year the regular budget was differed till the new government was sworn in – is by and large welcomed by the industry as positive.

“It can be transformational for attracting private investments to the sector,” said a Partner in one of the Big Four accounting firms, referring to the support for manufacturing new age technologies – solar PV, EV, storage, batteries and charging infrastructure. This will go a long way in making the energy sector fit for future, he added. That indeed is very thoughtful planning if implemented in earnest. As a developing country, it is in our interest to skip certain stages of development that were experienced by those countries that are major economic powers today. The US, for example, had a ‘century of automobilisation’ that triggered a massive wave of industrialisation, assembly line manufacturing, automation, infrastructure and much else. But that also had certain negative consequences. Automobilisation also negatively impacted public transport. It led to excesses in many other aspects of life, like the over dependence on fossil fuels and the politics of keeping the prices cheap, which in turn created several flashpoints around the globe. Public transportation – inadequate, antiquated and in need of serious infrastructure push – needs nurgent attention. Construction of metro lines in major cities is the right step, which needs acceleration. Mumbai, for example, has only about 17 km of metro line as of today. With new trends for electric mobility, the ownership model of personal transport is bound to be challenged by the emerging model of pooling and renting.
The energy sector is another area where India has an opportunity to skip many intermittent steps and leapfrog into the future – green, clean and local, or as experts put it – digital, distributed and decarbonised.
The Cover Story of this edition examines another important topic of the day – robots at work. There has been a tremendous response to our questionnaire with many diverse and out-of-the- box responses, apart from the regular conventional logic. Even as the edition was going to the
press, responses were coming, which will of course be hosted online for readers to browse through. The portal of Industrial Automation is also being revamped for better navigation.

With just seven weeks to go for the 14th edition of Automation Expo (September 25-28, 2019 at BCEC, Mumbai), we continue the Show Preview, which is accompanied by the Curtain Raiser this month, bringing both products as well as exhibiting companies into focus. With rapid developments in the automation arena, which is now enriched by so many new and emerging technologies in the wake of the IIoT revolution, visitors will have a lot to look forward to.
