Automation Expo Travels to South India

The Indian manufacturing industry is rapidly evolving with more and more companies adopting the Industry 4.0 ecosystem, with an increasing reliance on robotics at the higher end of the spectrum, and emphasis on low-cost pneumatic and hydraulic automation at the other end.

The sustained campaign for ‘Make-in-India’, backed effectively by proactive policy measures in providing single window clearances on projects as well as the PLI scheme incentivising Greenfield projects, is now yielding results. Automation is an important part of this renewed thrust on manufacturing to make Indian exports globally competitive.
The fact that automation is now the priority for not just large projects but also a necessity for MSMEs that form the backbone of the manufacturing industry was evident with the success of the recently concluded Automation ExpoSouth in Chennai. The event organised by IED Communications at the Chennai Trade Centre in the last week of April 2023 was a huge success with overwhelming response from both exhibitors and visitors. A look at the exhibits brought home the fact that visitors from both process industries and discrete manufacturing segments were looking for advanced solutions. Exhibitors did not disappoint them. From advanced valve automation and plant safety solutions to AMRs/AGVs and cobots; and immersive AR/VR experiences to cloud and edge computing products, visitors – a fair number coming from other States including Delhi – had a wide choice and options. A pictorial review of the event will feature in the June 2023 edition.
The Cover Story of this edition – Smart Sensors & Machine Vision – examines how new generation smart sensors are used extensively in basic machine vision applications like object detection, barcode reading, shape and size detection, etc. Machine vision systems make use of smart sensors and digital cameras to provide new applications in factory automation. A number of startups are combining these technologies to provide innovative solutions.
