Tech Trends 2023
Published on : Monday 02-01-2023
The New Year begins with surfeit of predictions and technology trends most likely to come into operation during the next 12 months.

As something that is continuously evolving, technological progress does not follow the calendar, but somehow the human mind is conditioned to believe that the New Year would bring in something new or revolutionary that would suddenly make the world a better place. Having said that, the trends are rather obvious as evident from most predictions, and these do not rely on any significant breakthrough, but are continuations, building upon existing technologies. Artificial Intelligence and its subset, Machine Learning, would find greater resonance in everything digital, as more data gets analysed, with more insights to act upon. A not so recent analysis by Endress+Hauser had indicated that up to 97 percent of data gathered remains unused, which is the obvious place to start. Smarter devices, edge computing, extended reality that embraces AR/VR/MR and greater applications of blockchain are among the other trends most likely to follow. The recent incident at AIIMS highlights the need for more effective cybersecurity measures, an area mostly neglected by most enterprises.
The Cover Story of this edition is focussed on Smart Manufacturing in the Indian context. According to a recent report, the global smart manufacturing market was valued at USD 88.7 billion in 2021 and is projected to reach USD 228.2 billion by 2027, driven primarily by the growing adoption of Industry 4.0. India needs to accelerate the current pace of digitalisation in the manufacturing industry without which it would simply not be able to raise the output and compete globally. The Cover Story has experts debating the current status and the way forward.
