Reliable industrial ethernet switches for different requirements – which is the right one?

In machine and plant building, switches are essential for connecting automation equipment in the network and for supplying all devices with the data necessary for smooth automation operation. They are available in highly diverse variants, which do not make the choice any easier. In general, the larger and better equipped a switch is, the more expensive it is.
In order to offer a customer the right value for money, the minimum requirements for each machine or plant must be defined precisely. Machine and plant builders must also consider what they want to offer their customers on-site. With simple unmanaged switches, which merely forward data, for example, it is not possible to monitor network information nor to track down anomalies that disrupt the stability of the network. Yet the latter holds much potential, for example, if a service agreement is included with the machine.
