EtherNet/IP: Taking Advantage of Native Plant Connectivity
Published on : Monday 01-08-2022
How EtherNet/IP fits your process needs to improve cleaning in place efficiency.

CIP is a core process to keep a food and beverage plant working within the expected food safety, quality and plant efficiency requirements.
The costs due to cleaning agents, water and energy is one point to consider. Another is the downtime while cleaning, which means the plant is no longer productive. Both aspects are critical for successful food and beverage operations. The main parameters that need to be considered are temperature, concentration and the velocity of the CIP liquids. This is true for any size of the plant or CIP system.
To save time and costs, it is important to have signals that are as fast and as accurate as possible. Improvements brought by EtherNet/IP communication will positively affect the changeover from product to water and cleaning agents.
The signals, conductivity, density or turbidity can be used within very tight tolerances, so that waste and spoilage is avoided. The same is true for the temperature and speed control of the supply and return pumps. Not only the more accurate reading, but also the opportunity to bring the signal directly from the sensor to the actuator, pump motor, control or switch valve allow very fast process control.
What are the key benefits of using EtherNet/IP?
1. Native Ethernet plant connectivity:
i. No gateways and adapters needed
ii. Flexible installation options (Star, Line, Ring*).

2. Flexible integration and configuration:
i. Connect to all EtherNet/IP systems (PLC, PAC, DCS)
ii. Rich device description file (EDS) for comprehensive access to device parameters
iii. Application specific input assemblies for selecting the right information you need, without unnecessarily increasing network load
iv. Implicit and explicit messaging bring access to Endress+Hauser's Heartbeat, diagnostics, verification and monitoring as well as advanced functionalities, such as totalizing or concentration measurement.
3. Simplified maintenance:
i. Improved maintenance processes, e.g., by directly accessing device diagnostics using the integrated webserver
ii. Reduce device replacement time with Automatic Device Configuration (ADC).
4. Features:
i. *Device Level Ring (DLR) support
ii. Electronic Description file (EDS) on board
iii. DTM available for Asset Management tools, such as FieldCare.
5. Preferred integration with Rockwell Automation:
i. Custom Add On Profile (AOP) for quick and full device configuration
ii. Add On Instruction (AOI) for seamless access to specific data, e.g., Heartbeat Technology data
iii. Faceplate as predefined user interface for configuration and display of specific process information
iv. PlantPAx field device integration.
