10 Steps to Troubleshoot any Level Transmitter

Dr Ravinder Goyal presents an intricately drafted 10 Step Process using which you can troubleshoot any Level Transmitter.

At EIP, each one of us knows that every action that we take must be focussed towards improving the efficiency of a process plant and shall add value to our customer, whether it is our product, presentation, discussion or a simple email. This is the reason why we always believe in putting our best foot forward towards the Level and Inventory (for Bulk Solids and Powders) measurement solutions that we manufacture, supply and commission.
We also understand that our products may not be present everywhere. But this does not prevent us from still providing value to our customers and we bring to you an intricately drafted 10 Step Process using which you can troubleshoot any Level Transmitter (these steps remain as much valid for a technician as is valid for any trained engineer handling the Level Transmitter).
So the moment you are reported with a problem in a Level Transmitter installed at your site, follow the below steps sequentially:
1. Check the Power Cables/Output Terminations/Power Supply
2. Check Display on Device (if there is no display, then call the OEM/if yes, then go to step 3)
3. Do an echo analysis and a false echo analysis
4. Restart the device (Power Off/On)
5. Try recalibrating and adjusting the Damping Time if there is variation in the reading
6. Reset to Factory Defaults
7. Calibrate again as per manual
8. Remove device from process – mechanical damage or process conditions causing malfunction. If it appears ok, then go to Step 9
9. Check the Level Variation and Accuracy on a wall. If it is ok, then the device is not working in process (due to various reasons). If not then the Device is damaged.
10. Contact OEM with an evaluation report on the above points.
Though the above steps appear simple, but over the years our engineers have been using these simple steps to rectify about 60% of the Level Transmitters and we hope you can achieve the same so that there is minimal downtime and the process is up and running in no time.
We do hope that the above information was useful. If you actually did find it useful then we request you to take a print out of this email and paste it on a board so that everyone concerned with handling the Level Transmitter can memorize the 10 steps.
Your feedback on the email per return would be highly appreciated and will help us in drafting more such helpful guides.
