India Automation Challenge 2023 at Automation Expo 2023 was a new initiative by the team of IED. This was highly successful and the selected models were out of many presented by various colleges and 3 rounds of selection process. The 10 final contestants were given a chance to present their models at the Expo and finally the selection process by highly competent experts decided the winners. This has really created a lot of enthusiasm in colleges and we expect to see a very large amount of participation in the next year. Normally all participants who have shown courage are awardees but the selection process selects topmost ranking models. As industry experts, we are very much pleased to get this great success. Congratulations to Industrial Automation for this great initiative.

The India Automation Challenge (IAC) 2023 held concurrently with Automation Expo 2023 is a new initiative led by Industrial Automation, the monthly magazine of IED Communications Ltd, the parent company. IAC 2023 was a carefully curated competition for final year engineering students to test their knowledge and skills in terms of practical projects with clearly defined criteria. Over 100 colleges participated, 10 made it to the shortlist and were given the opportunity to hold live demonstrations during Automation Expo 2023. Outstation participants were provided accommodation for their stay during the Expo. The judges had a hard time in selecting the winners – the top three in Platinum, Gold and Silver categories. The platinum winners took home a glittering rotating trophy, which will be showcased in their college till the next edition.
For me as the founder of IED Communications, it gives great satisfaction that after Industrial Automation magazine and Automation Expo event, the India Automation Challenge is another welcome addition to our portfolio, and an event to watch as it grows with each passing year, as the timeline for IAC 2024 has been released. I am sure there will be a much larger participation after the huge success of the maiden attempt.

Industrial Automation, pursuing their vision of representative of all stakeholders engaged with automation, has launched a new initiative – India Automation Challenge 2023. The concept of this initiative is to encourage the academic community of students and their faculty.
This concept is unique in that it helps students to highlight their skills not just in programming; rather it calls upon their skills to select problems which are socially relevant, and visualise the actual place of deployment. Hence it takes their understanding from a standard lab setting to actual field and user.
The challenge has asked students to build full-working models beyond blue-prints and block diagrams. Thereby a growth in understanding is achieved about the complexities involved in moving from textbook to field. This understanding is essential to make the youngsters quickly into a contributing employee.
It was heartening to see the amount of participation in the very first year of launch. It is to be expected that in the coming years, because this will be a feature every year on the sidelines of Automation Expo Mumbai, that the number of participating colleges will be more, and the projects more complex.

It was an honour for me to be judge of the ‘India Automation Challenge 2023’ organised by Industrial Automation, Mumbai, India. I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all the student participants of engineering colleges from every corner of India, who have worked hard, travelled all the way and displayed their capabilities for innovation using cutting edge technologies. I have also witnessed enthusiasm of students, teachers, and professors during this Automation Challenge. The live demonstrations showcased by students were witnessed by exhibition visitors from India’s leading manufacturng companies, engineering consultants, college students and exhibitors.
The projects displayed during India Automation Challenge 2023 serve as an inspiration to many of us, and we are proud of their accomplishments. The hard work, determination, and perseverance serve as a testament to the power of education in India and the potential that lies within each one will make new “Bharat”. Industrial Automation magazine and the publishing company, IED Communications, also the organisers of Automation Expo, have launched a great initiative to encourage final year engineering college students to think out of the box.
‘Championing Automation Excellence’

This year’s Automation Expo 2023 saw a new initiative for the final year engineering college students throughout India, to showcase their projects live during the Expo 2023.
We had received nominations from 27 colleges from all over India, I had the opportunity to be a part of this project competition, as a Judge during the initial Viva stage to Project simulation stage and finally to evaluate the live demonstration of their projects. All the projects were different and unique and all the 3 judges had a challenging and uphill task to eliminate 17 projects, during the Viva stage and Project simulation stage, and 10 colleges got a golden opportunity to showcase their projects live during the Expo 2023. Here again the judges found it extremely difficult to nail down the top 3 project categories – Platinum, Gold and Silver. The platinum winner also won a rotating trophy, which will be showcased in their college till Expo 2024. IED was magnanimous and had made arrangements to all the 10 college students for their accommodation and borne their travel expenses for their participation during Expo 2023. This year’s event was sponsored by some vendors and many more vendors have come forward to sponsor for next year's event. The glittering award ceremony was the icing on the cake, as students received their awards from industry stalwarts.
This new initiative by IED was a great motivation and success, as the students got an opportunity to interact with the industry professionals, and understand the industry expectation and requirements. With this initiative, IED has tried to bridge the gap between industry and institutions and would go a long way to motivate and groom the budding engineers.

The India Automation Challenge, an initiative by IED Communications for Indian youth and students to showcase their innovation and creativity in solving global automation challenges is one of its kind in India and the most laudable. The program aims to build a safe and better future by encouraging the youth to develop solutions that can help automate processes and make them more efficient. The challenge, open to engineering students, offers a platform to showcase their skills in Field Instrumentation, Robotics, Control Systems, and Futuristic Solutions in automation technology. The event was sponsored by leading technology partners and held in conjunction with the annual Automation Expo show, which gave these youths an opportunity to interact with Industry and Industry to look at their creations. India Automation Challenge 2023 at Automation Expo 2023, Mumbai, is a unique initiative designed, planned, and executed by the industrial sector specific Industrial Automation magazine and IED Communications. It provides a platform for engineering students to showcase their innovation to the industry world.
As part of the Organising team and a Jury member, I witnessed the students' enthusiasm from the beginning. We have received over 100 entries from various engineering students studying nationwide. As a jury, it was very challenging to identify the best innovation during every jury round. Finally, with the collaborative effort of the jury members at various stages, we identified the top 10 inventions and provided them a stall to showcase their innovation. The students and their academic mentors were also present during the Expo, and they collaboratively showcased their innovative solutions with models to the jury members and other industry experts.
During the Expo, the top 3 winners and the finalists were felicitated with trophies and prizes. Congratulations to all the participants and the winners. It was a fantastic experience, and I am grateful to Team IA for allowing me to become a part of the IAC-2023. I am looking forward to the success of IAC-2024!

I had the privilege to evaluate all 10 projects/demos presented by students of various prestigious colleges at the Expo. I was impressed by the thought process and vision of students while developing the projects. It reflected their ability to think about how they can apply the knowledge of science, engineering and technology to develop the products which can add value to the life of common people, farmers, workers, etc. Students had taken into account the factors like commercial viability, using new technologies to address the use cases, presentation and demo of their products.
